Washington Square Park is a bastion for tourism and finds itself in the heart of New York University. While the park is considered "basic" by locals, it still provides an open space for skaters within certain parts of the park. This is despite skating not being actually legal in the park which the cops and Park Enforcement Patrol seem to turn a blind eye to. It does not contain any traditional skate park constructions, though the fountain does become a makeshift bowl in the winter when the water is shut off, the park is simply an open space for skaters to freestyle in a typical park environment without obstacles. To an extent, the park is used due to proximity but it also does provide a space where beginners can get their footing and more experienced skaters can have fun. The environment is quite social to the point that individuals will come up to each other just because they have a skateboard often.
